Old-Vine Chalone Chenin Block Accorded Historical Vineyard Status

Chalone Vineyard announced that its 3.79-acre block of Chenin Blanc, originally planted in 1919, has been accorded Historical Vineyard status by the Historical Vineyard Society. Widely regarded as the oldest vineyard in Monterey County, the site was first planted by original owner Lucius Charles Tamm when his family became homesteaders in Monterey’s Gavilan Range. Tamm was likely attracted by Chalone’s limestone soils, which bear a remarkable resemblance to those of France’s famed Burgundy region.

Each year, Chalone Vineyard bottles a limited number of cases from this historic plot. According to winemaker Robert Cook, “The wine showcases both the unique terroir of our site and the long history of Chalone Vineyard. The distinctive minerality that comes from the limestone soils, along with the wine’s racy natural acidity, contributes to the complexity and age-worthiness of this great Chenin Blanc.”

Chalone Vineyard earned international recognition in 1976 when its Chardonnay ranked third among the top French and American Chardonnays in the historic Judgment of Paris wine competition. Twenty months later Chalone finished first in the San Francisco Wine Tasting recreating the Paris competition.

The Historic Vineyard Society’s mission is to inform the wine-drinking public on the importance of heritage vineyards through education, research and special events. For more information please go to www.historicvineyardsociety.org.

April 3, 2014, San Anselmo, CA –Big Bang Communications, one of the wine industry’s top PR and Marketing agencies, has changed its name to Big Bang Wine. The name change coincides with the launch of the company’s new national sales and distribution management division designed to help small and medium-sized wineries market, promote and sell their wines in key markets around the U.S.

According to Jean Jacote, a partner at Big Bang Wine, “The wine business has gotten progressively more difficult over the past few years, especially for small and medium-sized wineries. We created Big Bang Wine to let serious wineries concentrate their energy and efforts on the thing they do best – produce great wine. BBW is the only company that offers end-to-end solutions for wineries including media relations, writing, marketing, brand management, positioning, messaging, sales and distribution.”

To handle the national sales, branding and distributor management duties, the company has brought on Ted Reimer, a respected industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience. Ted has launched, owned, managed or worked for some of the country’s top distributors including The Sorting Table, Wilson Daniels, Sherbrook Cellars and The Henry Wine Group. The company also brought in Anna Heacock, previously the Marketing and Regional Sales Manager for Talley Vineyards in Arroyo Grande, to handle brand planning, account management and Direct to Consumer programs.

“Our deep wine knowledge and long history of success in public relations and marketing gives us a distinct advantage over our competition,” says Mike Lynch. “The addition of Ted Reimer and Anna Heacock ensures strong connections to some of the nation’s finest distributors and most prestigious accounts. We are in the process of assembling a portfolio of artisan wineries from California, Washington, Oregon, Australia, New Zealand, France and Italy. Our goal is to partner with serious producers making exceptional wines that exemplify region, variety and specific terroir.”
